AT&T set to make waves with new “Sponsored Data” 

Wireless provider AT&T has announced a new program called “Sponsored Data”, which promises to have a big impact on the US wireless market. “Sponsored Data” would permit companies pay for the data used by certain apps, so that AT&T users will not have those costs included in their monthly bills. This would allow users to do things like stream movies from Netflix without having to worry about the effect on their data cap. AT&T is also targeting businesses, which can use the plan to pay for the data consumed by the enterprise apps used by their employees.

Ralph de la Vega, AT&T CEO, said of the plan: “Customers love mobile content… [which] is increasingly available for customers almost anywhere and anytime. And that’s what makes this a win-win for customers and businesses – customers just look for the Sponsored Data icon and they know the data related to that particular application or video is provided as p[art of their monthly service. This is an exciting new opportunity for us and, most importantly, our customers.”
