Facebook joins the GSM Association, first social network to do so
In a joint statement with the GSM Association, Facebook announced it had just become the latest member of the latter organization, meaning it will have greater say in the regulations and issues affecting wireless carriers globally.
This is a nod to the emphasis Facebook has been putting on the importance of mobiles. In Q3 analysts noticed that mobile use of Facebook had increased by 45 percent from the same period in 2012. Facebook has already been working on building out its mobile apps and associated advertising services in response to these user tendencies. This also takes into account the creation of Internet.org, the Facebook-founded project that looks to increase the presence of developing countries online, specifically through mobile structure.
The GSMA is an association of mobile operators and related companies devoted to every aspect of the GSM mobile telephone system. Facebook is the first social network to join the GSMA. What this development will bring we have yet to see, but it is worth noting the sort of clout Facebook will reap in becoming a member of the association.
