As well as allowing use of electronics during takeoff and landing, Southwest Airlines is to be the first airline to offer what they’re referring to as “gate-to-gate” Wi-Fi. Thanks to its particular satellite technology, Southwest’s Wi-Fi is active ground up – unlike the system offered by airline Wi-Fi provider Gogo, which only switches on in the air.
There has been a race for airlines as far as onboard Wi-Fi goes, with an FAA ruling in October having allowed the use of phones, tablets and other electronics during takeoff and landing. The EU is said to be following suit.
